JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman head football coach Mike Clowney has announced the promotion of Johnson Jamison from defensive quality control coach to the program's new defensive line coach.

Jamison takes over for Coy DeWeese who leaves the program for an assistant coaching position at the University of Virginia.

"It's a dream come true to be back at the place that made you and to be able to make an impact on people the way it made an impact on me," Jamison said. "The one thing that I have learned from playing here and coaching here is that people care about you both on and off the field. Having been coached that way, there's no other way to do it and I look forward to continuing that tradition."

Jamison has worked his way up Carson-Newman's coaching staff ranks. He started as a defensive graduate assistant working with linebackers in 2020 before moving up to defensive quality control in 2021. 

He has helped tutor All-American linebacker Rondrow Peebles, as well as all-conference selections Alonzo Houston and Caleb Goins. 

"He's a guy that came in as a GA when I first got the head coaching job," Clowney said. "It's been a joy to watch him move up while earning every step of it."

Jamison returned to his alma mater after a stint as an assistant coach at Jefferson County High School.

Jamison made 32 tackles in his two-year career as a member of Carson-Newman's defensive line.  He was a part of the 2012 C-N football team that made an appearance in the regional finals before losing to Valdosta State.

As a player, his top game came in 2014 as a senior in the Eagles' opener against Edinboro.  He registered five tackles with a sack and two tackles for loss.

Jamison is married to the former Shannon Trentham, daughter of Carson-Newman Biology professor and Faculty Athletics Representative Bob Trentham. The couple has one child, Thompson.
