ROCK HILL, S.C. – Carson-Newman senior linebacker Alonzo Houston (Wimauma, Fla.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning.
Houston nets his second career honor and his first in four years for his performance in Carson-Newman's 24-14 win over No. 7 Newberry. Houston was last lauded Sept. 19, 2018 for a nine-tackle, two-tackle-for-loss, one-interception game in a win over Wingate.
Houston's line was nearly identical in the Eagles' win over seventh-ranked Newberry. He had 10 tackles, a half tackle for loss, a pick, a break up and a quarterback hurry.
The 10-tackle performance was the eighth such double-digit tackle performance of his career and the first of his senior season.
The pick was also the second of his career, and the first since he earned player of the week honors his freshman season.
Houston is Carson-Newman's first SAC Defensive Player of the Week honoree since Trayzel Jureidni-Wyche earned the league's laurels on his way to national player of the week recognition for a 4.5 sack performance in the 2019 regular season finale against Tusculum.
Houston and the rest of the Eagles are in action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Tusculum. Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network starts at 12:30 p.m. with the AEC Tailgate Show on Joy 620 (WRJZ-AM, Knoxville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
