Lady Eagles Blank King, 3-0, to Open 2009 Season

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Back-to-back first-half goals by Lizeth Munguia (Wilmington, N.C.) and Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) gave the Carson-Newman women's soccer team an early spark, as the Lady Eagles went on to claim a 3-0 victory in their season opener Thursday Night at McCown Field.

C-N coach Phil McNamara was impressed with his team's season-opening performance.

"We are pleased with this win," McNamara said. "It's a clean sheet and it provides confidence for the goalkeeper and the back four. There's a lot more work ahead of us, and I've got to give King a lot of credit. We can learn from their work ethic and how they were strong with and without the ball."

The Lady Eagles (1-0) held possession for most of the match, outshooting King (0-1) 18-6, including 12 shots on goal.

"We threatened the entire game to break them down," McNamara said. "I felt like it was a solid performance and a stepping stone for better things ahead."

Munguia put the Lady Eagles on the board at the 25:25 mark of the first half, as she finished off a cross from Melissa Morris (Sweetwater, Tenn.) to give C-N a 1-nil lead.

Less than two minutes later, Howell found the back of the net on a pass from Nikki Brannen (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) to push C-N's lead to 2-0.

The Lady Eagles put the match out of reach at the 52:43 mark of the second half on a goal by Sandra Kaelin (Trachau, Switzerland) that gave C-N a 3-0 cushion.

C-N goalkeeper Lauren MacKenzie (Barrie, Ontario) finished the night with four saves, while King's Lauren Fritts tallied nine saves.

The Lady Eagles return to action on Monday as they host Young Harris at 7 p.m. at McCown Field.
