BELMONT, N.C. – Carson-Newman junior
midfielder Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater,
Tenn.) tallied the lone goal of the match in the seventh minute of
overtime to lift the Lady Eagles (14-2-1) over the Crusaders of
Belmont Abbey College (11-4) by a 1-0 score.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in 90 minutes of
regulation play despite C-N outshooting the Abbey by a 10-3 margin.
Grunenfelder tallied her fourth goal of 2009 at the 96:01 mark for
the victory as she found the lower left corner of the net from the
top of the box.
The final shot count was 11-4 in favor of Carson-Newman.
Sophomore Lauren MacKenzie (Barrie, Ontario,
CANADA) picked up her 11th win of the season in goal for the Lady
Eagles, posting four saves including one during overtime, while
Belmont Abbey’s Kelsey Lovell (Ada, Mich.) had four saves of
her own despite the loss.
C-N also reclaimed first place in the NCAA Division II Southeast
Regional Rankings that were released by the NCAA earlier today.
Columbus State falls to second while Tusculum, Armstrong Atlantic
State, Newberry and Catawba round out the top six.
Carson-Newman will complete its regular season schedule when it
travels to Newberry, S.C. to take on Newberry College in South
Atlantic Conference action at 2:00 p.m. With a win and a Tusculum
loss or tie, the Lady Eagles will claim at least a share of the
2009 SAC crown.
