JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- The seventh-ranked Carson-Newman
women's soccer team battled Catawba to a 1-1 tie on Saturday night
in South Atlantic Conference play at McCown Field, wrapping up
homecoming weekend at Carson-Newman.
The draw snaps the Lady Eagles' (11-0-1, 3-0-1 SAC) school-record
11-match winning streak.
"When it's homecoming, you have alumni here and other things going
on, so you always want to put your best foot forward," C-N head
coach Phil McNamara said. "I thought at times we threatened and
played well. It just wasn't consistent enough for my liking against
such a good opponent in Catawba."
C-N jumped out in front in the 34th minute on Trenna Howell's (Oak
Ridge, Tenn.) ninth goal of the season, giving the Lady Eagles a
1-nil lead. Sandra Kaelin (Trachau, Switzerland) was credited with
the assist.
But Catawba (7-3-2, 2-1-1) answered less than three minutes later,
as Andrea Dunshie (Apex, N.C.) found the back of the net after a
miscommunication by the defense to knot the match at 1-1 heading
into the locker room.
"That was an unfortunate goal," McNamara said. "The ball should
have never gotten to that point in the play. We should have been a
little smarter in that situation, but the girls responded well
after it."
The Lady Eagles had several opportunities to take the lead in the
second half and outshot Catawba 8-3 over the final 45 minutes and
both overtimes but they could not capitalize. C-N held a 17-8 shot
advantage for the match, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.
Lady Eagles goalkeeper Lauren MacKenzie (Barrie, Ontario) collected
three saves on the night, while Catawba's Lindsay Webster
(Hopkinton, Mass) tallied five saves.
C-N returns to the pitch at home on Tuesday against Lee University,
the 2008 NAIA national champion. The match is slated to start at 7
p.m. at McCown Field.
