No. 11 Carson-Newman Women’s Soccer Earns Top Seed in 2009 Food Lion SAC Tournament

ROCK HILL, S.C. — The 11th-ranked Carson-Newman women’s soccer team has earned the top seed in the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament, conference officials announced Sunday.

The Lady Eagles (15-2-1, 6-1-1 SAC), who won their fifth regular season conference title in the last seven years and are the defending tournament champions, will host eighth-seeded Brevard (6-11-1, 0-6-1) in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at McCown Field. C-N defeated the Tornados 2-1 in the regular season.

Brevard tied with Mars Hill for eighth place in the league standings, and the teams tied during their regular season matchup. Conference officials turned to a coin flip to decide the eighth seed, and Brevard won the flip.

Tusculum College (14-4-1, 6-2) is the second seed and will face seventh-seed Lincoln Memorial University (7-8-2, 3-5). The Pioneers defeated the Lady Railsplitters 5-4 in their regular-season matchup on September 23.

Newberry College and Catawba College tied for third place in the league standings with 5-2-1 conference records. Newberry earned the third seed by virtue of its 1-0 victory over Catawba in their regular-season meeting on September 30.

Newberry, 13-4-1 overall, will face sixth-seed Lenoir-Rhyne University (14-6, 4-4) in a quarterfinal match on Wednesday. Newberry defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 2-1 in overtime when they met on October 17.

Catawba (12-4-2, 5-2-1) is the fourth seed and will host fifth-seed Wingate (11-3-3, 4-3-1) in a quarterfinal match on Wednesday. Catawba has advanced to the tournament championship match each of the past three years, but has lost the tournament title in a penalty kick shootout each time. Catawba defeated Wingate 2-0 in their meeting on October 3.

Quarterfinal winners advance to the tournament semifinals, which will be held at Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex in Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday, November 6. The two women's semifinals will be played at 6 p.m.

The women's tournament championship will be Sunday, November 8 at 4 p.m. at Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex.
