Men’s tennis kicks off 2014 spring season against Bulldogs

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis team hits the road for its 2014 spring season opener at Tennessee Wesleyan tomorrow at 1 p.m.

"The guys are really excited," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said, "to start the season against Tennessee Wesleyan."

C-N fell to the Bulldogs 6-3 last season. Then freshman Juan Perez (Ecuador) defeated Alex Lahuza 6-0, 6-0 at no. 1 singles. Jonathan Allen picked up a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win against Gad Azulay at no. 4 singles.

At no. 1 doubles, Perez and Austin Mackay roped in an 8-3 victory over Lahuza and Brett Wade.

"The weather has not cooperated and we have not been able to get outside as much as we would like," Coach Love said, "but we are ready to play.  Fortunately this is an indoor match at Fairfield Glade Resort in Crossville, Tennessee."

Last season, the Eagles finished 7-12, 2-7 in conference play. They defeated conference foes Lenoir-Rhyne 6-3 and Brevard 8-1, both on the road.

This spring, C-N was selected 10th in the 2014 SAC preseason poll with 35 points. Brevard came in at 11th with 22 points closely followed by Lenoir-Rhyne with 18.

Wingate locked down the no. 1 position with 107 points. Tusculum, Lincoln Memorial, Anderson and Coker all placed top five with 99, 93, 91 and 90 points respectively.

Newberry, Queens, Catawba and Mars Hill all placed in the middle of the pack with 71, 70, 54 and 42 points respectively.

"This is a good opportunity to learn some things about ourselves," Coach Love said, "and see what we need to work on in preparation for the beginning of conference play later this month."

The Eagles take on the Bulldogs tomorrow at 1 p.m. C-N's first home match is Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. against Alabama Huntsville.
