JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (3-9) men's tennis team dropped a 7-2 contest to North Greenville (5-8) Saturday afternoon at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
We came out flat in doubles and that cost us," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "We lost all three doubles points."
The duo of Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and Stefano Daza (Venezuela) came close to a doubles victory but ultimately lost 8-5 to Sergio Araujo Filho and Santiago Robles in the no. 2 spot.
"The men battled back in singles," Coach Love said. "Juan and Jon won their singles matches to make up the overall team score 4-2."
Jonathan Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) defeated Juan Vargas 6-2, 6-0 at no. 4 singles. Juan Perez (Ecuador) secured the Eagles' second point in the no. 1 position with a 6-3, 6-3 final.
"We were ahead in the third set at no. 2 singles," Coach Love said. "Stefano was up 3-0 in the third and it looked like it was going to be an overall team score of 4-3 with two singles matches to play. However, Stefano could not close out his opponent."
Daza fell in a third setto Rafael Lenz Gonzalez at no. 2 singles 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. "This meant that North Greenville scored their fifth team point," Coach Love said, "to clinch the victory."
Mackay fought to a 7-6, 6-2 decision in favor of Filho at no. 5 singles.
"Once again," Coach Love said, "I loved the effort of our guys. We've just got to stay the course, learn from this performance, and move on."
