C-N returns home to take on Lee

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (1-5) men's tennis team hosts Lee University (1-0) in its home opener tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.

"We are excited for our first home match," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "It's going to be a good chance for us to rebound"

The Eagles are coming off a tough 9-0 loss against Young Harris last Sunday.

"We played better last match," Coach Love said, "but the outcome wasn't what we wanted. The men put in a good effort."

On Feb. 9, Lee defeated Christian Brothers University 9-0. The Flames' match against Georgetown College that was scheduled for last Friday was cancelled.

"I expect Lee will be a pretty good team," Coach Love said. "I am looking forward to see how we progress against good competition."

C-N last played the Flames on Feb. 18, 2012; Lee defeated the Eagles 6-3.

Paul Birdsong and Eric Muller, both now graduated, each brought in a point in singles play. Garret Duron, now a junior, brought in the Eagles' third point at no. 6 singles with a 5-1 contest after Fabio Medina retired with injury.

"The men have been working on getting better," Coach Love said, "and have been making progress. We just have to continue the process of getting better and prepare for our first conference match later this week."

The match begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
