University of the Cumberlands heads to C-N for tennis match

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (2-6) men's tennis team hosts the University of the Cumberlands (1-2) tomorrow at 2 p.m.

"Hopefully," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said, "the weather will cooperate with us."

The Eagles fell 7-2 at Newberry last Saturday. Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) played a role in both of C-N's points.

"We are looking forward to getting back out on the court," Coach Love said, "and bouncing back from a tough loss to Newberry in our last outing."

The first point came at no. 2 doubles with an 8-6 victory in favor of Mackay and Stefano Daza (Venezuela). In singles play, Mackay toppled his opponent 6-4, 6-2 in the no. 5 spot.

Last Sunday, the Patriots defeated St. Catharine College 5-2. The Cumberlands claimed two points in doubles play in both the no. 1 and no. 3 positions. The remaining three points were earned at no. 1, 3 and 4 singles.

The matches at no. 2 and 6 singles were deemed incomplete; SCC led the Patriots in both before the dismissal.

C-N defeated the Patriots 7-2 last season. The Cumberlands received its points at no. 1 singles and no. 3 doubles and the Eagles claimed the rest.

"The men have competed well in the last few matches," Coach Love said, "and I want to see that trend continue."

The match kicks off at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
