Eagles fly home with SAC victory

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (5-14, 3-5 SAC) men's tennis team overpowered Mars Hill (5-11, 3-6 SAC) for a 6-3 win Wednesday afternoon.

 

"This was a huge win for the guys," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "They played well in doubles and that set the tone for the rest of the day."

 

The Eagles led the Lions 2-1 after doubles play. The team of Joao Pedro Oliveria (Brazil) and Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) defeated Alberto Ortiz and Joel Sturgis 8-1 in the no. 2 spot. "Austin and JP got us off to a good start," Coach Love said, "winning rather quickly at two doubles."

 

Garret Duron (Woodstock, Ga.) and Jonathan Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) brought home an 8-3 contest over Markus Gattner and Blake Covington in the no. 3 position. "Garret and Jon," Coach Love said, "followed with a solid win at three doubles."

 

At no. 1 doubles, Stefano Daza (Venezuela) and Juan Perez (Ecuador) fought hard against Euguerio Guerrero and Sam Lee before dropping the match 9-8 (3-0).

 

C-N's next four points came in straight sets at no. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles. "In singles," Coach love said, "Stefano, Jon, Garret and Austin came through with nice wins."

 

At no. 3, Daza came out victorious after a first set tiebreaker over Lee 7-6 (2-0), 6-0. Duron torched Blake Covington 6-2, 6-2 in the no. 6 spot.

 

Allen beat Sturgis 6-2, 6-4 in the no. 4 spot while Mackay contributed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Markus Gattner at no. 5. "Austin's win," Coach Love said, "was the clincher."

 

Perez fell to Ortiz after three sets at no. 2 singles 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

 

The Eagles continue conference play on the road Saturday at 1 p.m. against Lincoln Memorial.
