Eagles clinch first conference win against L-R

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (3-8, 1-1 SAC) men's tennis team took down conference foe Lenoir-Rhyne (2-6, 0-3 SAC) 5-4 Friday afternoon.

"This was a good win for us," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "We came out and swept the doubles, and that proved to be most important as the day went along."

The Eagles swept the Bears in doubles play. Juan Perez (Ecuador) and Joao Pedro Oliveira (Brazil) defeated Robin Hochguertel and Hunter Pack 8-5 at no. 1 doubles. In the no. 2 spot, Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and Stefano Daza (Venezuela) toppled Filip Dobrosavljevic and Kilian Symalla 8-2. Jonathan Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) and Lee Presson (Crossville, Tenn.) secured an 8-4 victory over John Christian Reid and Matthew Ledford at no. 3.

Daza and Allen claimed C-N's two points in singles play. "In singles," Coach Love said, "Stefano gave us our fourth team point. Jon followed with the team clinching point."

Daza seized a 6-0, 6-1 decision from Dobrosavljevic in the no. 3 position. At no. 4 singles, Allen stomped Jordan Lawson 6-1, 6-0.

Mackay fell just shy of victory at no. 5 singles. He dropped a third set tiebreaker to Reid 4-6, 7-6 (2-0), 10-4.

"It was great to see Jon win his match and secure the team win," Coach Love said. "It was another great effort by the guys and it finally resulted in the outcome we've been looking for."

The Eagles host North Greeneville tomorrow at 12 p.m.
