Eagles start busy week on the road against Cobras

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis team will play five matches in seven days, the Eagles open up the week with a trip to Hartsville, S.C. to take on the Coker Cobras on Saturday afternoon.

"On the men's side, we certainly want to continue the momentum gained from the Lenoir-Rhyne win." Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said, "If that team shows up against Coker, then we will have a chance to win."  

 

Carson-Newman (2-4, 1-1) looks to break a three-match losing streak against Coker (7-4, 1-1) that has dated back to the 2014 tennis season. Junior tennis player Kevin Mendes (Chattanooga, Tenn.) is the only Eagle to record a win in singles action against the Cobras. Mendes has two victories both coming at the No.5 singles position.

 

The Eagles look to keep the win streak alive after a 5-4 conference victory over Lenoir-Rhyne last weekend. The match lasted seven hours, with Mendes winning the final two sets of the No. 6 singles match to seal the win for the Eagles.

 

Gabriel Dabdab (Brazil) and Joao Pedro Oliveria (Brazil) look to improve a two match winning streak in doubles play this weekend. The tandem has acquired a 4-4 record on the season but are 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference play. Oliveria looks to improve on his 4-4 record in No. 1 singles play, while Dabab (5-3) looks to get back in the win column at No.5 singles.  

 

Stefano Daza (Venezuela) and Rodolfo Schwarz (Brazil) are looking to break a five match losing streak in No. 1 doubles. Daza is looking to break a three match losing streak and Schwarz is looking to break a two match losing streak this weekend against the Cobras.

 

Coker is coming into the weekend matchup riding a three match losing streak that included losses to Newberry, Pfeiffer and Belmont Abbey.

 

The Cobras have four players that have six or more wins in singles play this season. Mark Watt leads the team at No.1 singles play with a 9-2 record. Felix Schweyer has compiled an 8-3 overall record and has played at the No.2 – No.6 singles positions. Schweyer has found the most at the No.4 singles position going 6-0.

 

Hunter Horton has a 7-4 overall record with the best success coming at the No. 3 singles position with a 4-4 record. Walker Long has won six straight at the No. 6 singles position coming into the weekend against the Eagles.

 

The duo of Henrik Hellbe and Horton have compiled an 8-3 record at No.1 doubles, while Dominic Allan and Watt have a 6-3 record at No.2 doubles.
