Eagles looking to extend win streak over Tornados

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis team will look to continue a dominant winning streak against Brevard on Saturday afternoon.

Carson-Newman (5-8, 3-5) has won the past five matches against Brevard (4-14, 0-8) dating back to the 2012 tennis season. Last season the Eagles defeated the Tornados 8-1 at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex.

The Eagles are coming off of a 7-2 win against the University of Cumberlands on Thursday evening. The win broke a three match losing streak for the Eagles. The Tornados are coming into this weekend's matchup with a six game losing streak. Brevard's last win came on March 6, against Spring Arbor.

Joao Pedro Oliveria (Brazil) leads the Eagles at No.1 singles and is currently on a three match winning streak. The senior from Brazil is 9-6 overall on the year and is 5-3 on the season. Last season against Brevard, Oliveria picked up a three set victory against David Taggart at the No. 1 singles position.

Another Eagle that has come on strong of late is junior Kevin Mendes (Chattanooga, Tenn.). Mendes is 9-2 overall on the year at No.6 singles, while compiling a 6-2 record in conference play. The junior from Chattanooga is currently riding a three game winning streak and is looking to have his second four game winning streak of the season.

Stefano Daza (Venezuela) and Jesus Bacete-Sanz (Spain) have been inserted into a variety of spots in the lineup throughout the season. Daza has seen the most action at the No. 4 position compiling a 3-4 record and is currently on a two match winning streak. Bacete-Sanz does not have a set position on the team, but has compiled a 4-4 record on the season.

Marc Bantel (Germany) and Rodolfo Schwarz (Brazil) have had a rough season to say the least. Bantel is currently riding a five match losing streak and a 3-11 record. Schwarz has just two wins on the year and has lost two in a row.

In doubles play the Eagles have a solid No. 2 doubles tandem of Dabdab and Oliveria. The Brazilian tandem are 9-5 on the season and have a 6-1 mark in conference play. The No.1 doubles team on the year has been primarily a combination of Daza and Schwarz. The duo have compiled for a 2-8 record on the season.

The Eagles have yet to settle on a No. 3 doubles team as they have used a quartet of teams during the season. The No. 3 doubles teams have combined for a 4-9 record on the season.

Brevard is led by Cre Still at the No.1 singles position. Still is the only singles player to register a win during conference play this season with a 1-4 record. The Tornadoes best player is Tom Mittring who has compiled a 7-14 record on the season.

Every Brevard player has a losing streak of at least a match, with the longest losing streak belonging to Will Christiansen who has a six match losing streak.
