JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis team will play its final match of the season on Friday afternoon, against Queens at 2 p.m.

"We are just going to have to play smart tennis," Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said. "We just have to cut down the unforced errors and we have to take advantage of opportunities."

Carson-Newman (7-9, 5-5) has the chance to finish with a winning record in conference play for the first time since the 2005-2006, with a win against Queens (13-1, 10-0). The Eagles have already been eliminated from the South Atlantic Conference Tournament next weekend.

 

Joao Pedro Oliveira (Brazil) leads the Eagles in singles play at the No. 1 spot. The senior is 11-7 overall on the year and is 7-3 in conference play. Oliveira saw a five-match winning streak come to a close against North Georgia on Wednesday afternoon. This will be the final game for Oliveira in an Eagle uniform.

 

Stefano Daza (Venezuela) is the only other senior on the team for the Eagles. The native of Venezuela is 8-10 overall on the season and is 4-6 in conference play. The senior has played primarily at the No. 4 singles position with a 5-5 record.

 

Two Eagles that have spent time moving up and down the lineup are Marc Bantel (Germany) and Rodolfo Schwarz (Brazil). Each player has seen time at the No.2, No.3 and No.4 singles spots in the lineup. Schwarz is 3-10 overall on the season and is just 2-6 in conference play. Bantel is currently riding a three-match winning streak and is now 6-11 overall and 4-6 in SAC play.

 

Rounding out the final two singles positions are Gabriel Dabdab (Brazil) and Kevin Mendes (Chattanooga, Tenn.). Dabdab is 10-6 overall on the season and is 5-3 in conference play during his first season at Mossy Creek. Dabdab is 8-5 on the season at the No. 5 singles position. Mendes saw a five-match winning streak come to a close against North Georgia, the junior is 11-3 overall on the season and 8-2 in conference play at the No. 6 spot.

 

In doubles play Jesus Bacete-Sanz (Spain) and Mendes have come on strong of late at the No. 3 doubles position. The pairing have won four consecutive matches and are now 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.

 

The No. 2 doubles team of Dabdab and Oliveira have been the most successful doubles combination for the Eagles. The tandem are 11-6 overall on the year and 8-1 in conference play this season. The top doubles pairing of Daza and Schwarz are just 3-10 overall this season.

 

The Royals have five players with nine or more wins this season in singles play. Jules Athalis is 9-2 overall on the season and 6-1 in SAC play at the No. 1 singles position. Athalis has won four consecutive matches entering the match on Friday.

 

The No. 2 singles player is Paolo Bompieri who is currently riding a six match winning streak. Bompieri is 11-3 overall on the season and is 9-1 in conference play. Bompieri is 3-0 at No. 1 singles and is 8-3 in No. 2 singles.

 

Augustin Aran Martin has compiled an overall record of 12-2 on the season and an 8-2 mark in conference play. Martin has won six straight matches and has gone 9-2 at the No. 3 singles position. Andor Vas is 9-4 overall on the year and is 7-3 in the No. 4 singles position for the Royals.

 

Giovanni Setti is locked in at the No. 5 singles position with a 7-1 overall record and a 5-0 mark in conference play. The final singles position is split between Sebastian Meum and Joel Dunlap both are undefeated at the No. 6 singles spot.

 

Queens has three solid doubles combinations, starting at the No. 1 tandem of Bompieri and Vas. The duo have won ten consecutive matches and are 10-1 on the season. The duo is a perfect 8-0 in conference play this season.

 

The No. 2 doubles team is Meum and Setti, who are 7-1 overall on the season and 6-1 in conference play. The final doubles tandem is Athalis and Dunlap who are 6-1 on the year and 5-1 in SAC play.
