Eagles looking to win three straight in SAC play

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis team will look to pick-up a pair of victories against Wingate and Catawba this weekend.

"We have a couple of important conference matches this weekend." Carson-Newman coach Jean Love said, "Wingate is a very tough opponent for us. We will need to stick the the formula of winning at least two of the doubles matches so that we can  have some momentum going into singles."

Carson-Newman (3-4, 2-1) will attempt to win three straight conference matches for the first time since the 2009-2010 season when they face Wingate (8-2, 4-0) on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs are coming into Friday's match riding a four-match win streak.

The Eagles are led by Joao Pedro Oliveira (Brazil) at the No.1 singles position. The senior has compiled a 5-4 record on the season and is currently on a two match win streak. Fellow countrymen Gabriel Dabdab (Brazil) has found success during his freshman campaign, acquiring a 6-3 record. The duo are also doubles partners and are currently on a three-match win streak in route to a 5-4 overall record.

Kevin Mendes (Chattanooga, Tenn.) has become the closer for the men's tennis team at the No.6 singles position. Mendes is 4-1 on the season and is currently riding a two-match win streak. Stefano Daza (Venezuela) has played in a variety of spots for the Eagles, but has acquired a 4-5 record on the year.   

The tandem of Daza and Rodolfo Schwarz (Brazil) are still trying to crack the scoreboard at No.1 doubles. The duo has begun the season 0-6 and will look to end that streak on Monday afternoon. The most consistent duo for the Eagles at No.3 doubles is Marc Bantel (Germany) and Jesus Bacete-Sanz (Spain) who have compiled a 3-2 record on the season.
The Bulldogs are led by two South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week selections in Daniel Belsito and Theo Dessacs. Belsito 7-2 on the year at No.2 singles, while Dessacs is 6-3 on the year at No. 3 singles.
Filippo Pezzoli is 5-4 at No. 1 singles this season but is currently on a two match losing streak. Josh DuToit is 5-4 on the season at No. 4 singles is coming into the Friday matchup having won two straight. Amir Zair is 5-2 at No. 5 singles, while Nicholas Oliveira is 7-3 on the season playing primarily at the No. 6 singles position.
In doubles play the Bulldogs are very stout up front with No.1 doubles tandem Belsito and Dutoit. The duo has a 6-3 overall record while winning their first four conference matches. At No. 2 doubles the duo of Tyler Schofer and Zair are 4-2 on the year. Rounding out doubles play is Duncan Addison and Dessacs who are 8-1 on the season while primarily playing in the No. 3 doubles position.
Carson-Newman will visit Catawba (9-7, 3-2) on Sunday morning. The Indians won last year's meeting against the Eagles 6-3. Catawba is coming into the weekend with a two-match winning streak.
"We have had some close battles with Catawba over the last few years." Love said, "I expect the same this time around. Once again, we must play smart tennis to win.  We just cannot afford to make loose errors and beat ourselves."
The Indians are led by Michael Patch who is 8-6 at No. 1 singles this season. Ryan Reid is 10-5 overall on the season while mainly playing at the No. 4 singles position. Adam Rocko has compiled a 10-6 record while seeing playing time primarily at the No. 6 singles position.
In doubles play the Indians No. 1 doubles tandem of Patch and Luca Picci is 5-6 on the season, while the No. 2 doubles duo of Carson Hiers and Reid are 6-5 on the year. The final doubles pairing is made up of Lucas Miller and Rocko who have compiled a 3-3 record.
