Eagles terminate Tornadoes for the sixth consecutive year

BREVARD, N.C. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis team broke a two match losing streak in South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, with an 8-1 victory against Brevard.

 

Carson-Newman (7-8, 5-5) used strong doubles play to help defeat Brevard (4-15, 0-8). The No. 2 doubles tandem of Joao Pedro Oliveria (Brazil) and Gabriel Dabdab (Brazil) got things off on the right foot for the Eagles. The tandem won their third consecutive match to improve to 7-1 within conference play.

 

The No. 3 doubles team of Jesus Bacete-Sanz (Spain) and Kevin Mendes (Chattanooga, Tenn.) played their fourth match together as a pairing. The duo came away with an 8-1 victory; it was their second consecutive win as a pairing.

 

The No. 1 doubles team of Rodolfo Schwarz (Brazil) and Stefano Daza (Venezuela) continue their struggles as a pairing. The duo lost 8-2, the loss drops their record to 2-8 on the season.

 

For the first time all season the Eagles swept singles play in straight sets. Oliveria started things off for the Eagles at No. 1 singles. The senior from Brazil picked up a 7-5, 6-2 straight sets victory over Tom Mittring. Oliveria is riding a four match winning streak and is now 10-6 overall on the season.

 

Mendes the No.6 singles player picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory, giving the junior a four match winning streak. The native of Chattanooga has surged out to a 10-2 overall record and a 7-2 conference record.

 

A pair of Eagles were able to shatter losing streaks on Saturday afternoon. Bantel ended a five match losing streak at the No. 3 singles position and Schwarz ended a two match losing streak at the No. 2 singles position. Bantel is now 4-11 on the season, while Schwarz is 3-8 on the year.

 

Daza continued his three match win streak at No. 4 doubles with a 6-4, 6-1 victory. The senior is now 7-9 on the season and 4-4 at the No. 4 singles position. Dabdab picked up his second consecutive victory at the No. 5 singles position with a straight sets win. The freshman is now 9-5 on the season and 4-3 within conference play.

 

The Eagles next game will be on April 5, against Reinhardt. The match time is set for 2 p.m.
