JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis team will face off against Mars Hill this weekend in an attempt to break a four-match home losing streak at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex.

"We have been so close," Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said. "We've had several close conference matches that ended 5-4...if we win a few of those we could be sitting in a much different place right now. If we finish strong we could earn our way into the tournament."

Carson-Newman (6-8, 4-5) will attempt to have its first .500 season in conference play since the 2009-2010 season. The Eagles have a chance to have their first winning season in conference play since the 2005-2006 season.

Reigning South Atlantic Conference player of the week Joao Pedro Oliveira (Brazil) leads the Eagles into Friday's matchup with the Royals. Oliveira is riding a four-match winning streak and is 10-6 overall on the season. Oliveira is also 6-3 at No. 1 singles in conference play.

"JP has been a really nice and solid player for us, for several years now," Love said.

Fellow senior Stefano Daza (Venezuela) is currently on a three-match winning streak. Daza has played primarily at the No. 4 singles position, but has seen time at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots as well. The senior has compiled a 7-9 overall record on the season.

Rodolfo Schwarz (Brazil) has had a rough year so far in his return to college tennis. The junior is just 3-8 on the season playing primarily at the No. 2 singles position. Fellow junior Marc Bantel has also had a rough season, going just 4-11 primarily at the No. 3 singles spot.

The Eagles have solidified its No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. Gabriel Dabdab (Brazil) is 9-5 in his freshman campaign at the No. 5 singles spots. Kevin Mendes (Chattanooga, Tenn.) is rolling on a four-match winning streak. The junior is 10-2 on the season with a 7-2 overall record.

The No. 2 doubles team of Dabdab and Oliveira are coasting with a 7-1 conference record and a 10-5 overall record. The duo are also on a three-match winning streak. The No.1 and No. 3 doubles teams have combined to go 7-21 this season.

"Since day one they have communicated and meshed well together," Love said. "Their games really complement each other well in doubles play."

The Eagles opponent this weekend is Mars Hill (2-15, 1-9). The Lions are coming off of an 8-1 loss to Coker. Mars Hill is 0-8 on the road this season.

The Lions lone player with a winning record is Ben Reid. Reid is the only Lion with a winning streak of any sort as well. Reid is 9-7 overall on the year splitting time between the No.2 and No. 3 singles positions.

Alberto Ortiz and Carlos Suares Riesco, join Reid as the only players with at least four wins on the season. Ortiz is 5-9 on the season with playing time at both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions. Riesco is 4-11 this season having seen time at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions.

In doubles play the Lions have struggled all season long trying to get anything going. The Lions top duo of Ortiz and Reid are 6-9 on the season. The rest of the doubles teams combined for five victories on the season. Combined the Lions are 4-23 in SAC play.
