Herrity, Wade Help Ignite Offense in 10-0 Drubbing of Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C. – Julianne Herrity (Donegal, Ireland) logged a hat trick, Lauren Wade (Coleraine, Northern Ireland) netted two goals to go with three assists and Holly Talbut-Smith (Crawley, England) totaled four points as the Carson-Newman women's soccer team overpowered Francis Marion University on their way to a 10-0 victory at Hartzler Field on Saturday afternoon.

"We got out in front early," Coach Richard Moodie said. "We created chances and opportunities and we're dangerous when we do that. We also got some positive moments from our freshman, who've come in and done a great job as well. It always feels good when you win."

The Eagles jumped in front early as, in the 16th minute, Chelsea Jordan (Knoxville, Tenn.) took a pass from Wade inside the 18-yard box and directed it into the net for her first goal of the year and a 1-0 advantage.

In the 32nd minute, it was Wade who added to the lead. After receiving the ball from Talbut-Smith, Wade fired a shot on target from outside the box to increase her team's lead to 2-0. For Wade, she has started the season with goals in four straight games.

Exactly eight minutes later, Herrity got into the act with her first goal of the contest, off another assist by Talbut-Smith. In the 42nd minute, Talbut-Smith tacked on her third goal of the season and C-N led 4-0 at the half.

Following halftime, the Eagles continued their offensive barrage. Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) got on the scoresheet for the first time this season in the 50th minute by beating the goalkeeper with a shot from inside the box. Wade made the score 6-0 in the 55th minute, when, after a save on her initial shot, she knocked in the rebound for her fifth goal of the year.

Meanwhile, in the C-N end of the field, goalkeeper Jacqueline Burns (Cookstown, Northern Ireland) put together her second shutout in four games. She made two saves on the day, giving her a total of nine this season as she earned her third win.

The next two Carson-Newman scores were the first in the careers of two underclassmen. Freshman Allie-Anne Blackburn (Franklin, Tenn.) scored in the 64th minute off a shot from the right wing and in the 83rd minute, sophomore Bailey Williams (Powell, Tenn.) contributed her first goal as an Eagle. Freshman Sydney Spadafora (Collierville, Tenn.) picked up an assist on Williams' goal for her first collegiate point.

The final two goals of the match came off the foot of Herrity, the first one coming in the 85th minute with an assist from Blackburn and the second in the 86th, with help from Wade. Herrity's three goals are the most by an Eagle since Trenna Howell scored three on September 17, 2011 against Brevard. Wade's seven points are most in a game since Howell had seven on August 31st, 2011 against Chowan. That match against Chowan is also the last time Carson-Newman tallied this many goals in a game, as they won that contest 12-0.

Monday is when the Eagles will take the field again, as they travel to USC-Aiken to play the final game in their early season non-conference schedule. Kick-off is set for 1pm.
