Eagles take sixth spot in NCAA's initial Southeast region rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA has released its initial regional rankings for 2016 and the Carson-Newman women's soccer team has garnered the No. 6 spot in the Southeast Region.

The regional rankings are used by the NCAA to select teams for the NCAA Tournament at season's end. The top six squads from each region are chosen for postseason play, though the winner of the South Atlantic Conference tournament does receive an automatic bid.

The Eagles have compiled a 10-3 record with a 6-2 mark in the SAC. Last season, they claimed the top spot in the Southeast and earned a number one seed in the region.

Lenoir-Rhyne is the only other SAC school in the rankings, as they've been placed one spot ahead of the Eagles at No. 5. Columbus State holds the top spot in the region, followed by Limestone with UNC Pembroke rounding out the top three.

Conference play continues for Carson-Newman on Saturday when they travel to Brevard to face the Tornados at 5 p.m.
