Tennessee Sports Writers Association tabs Ragney as Player of the Week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After helping Carson-Newman capture the South Atlantic Conference Tournament championship and being named the tourney MVP, sophomore Heida Ragney (Akureyri, Iceland) has been named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week.

Ragney's week began against Catawba on Tuesday in the tournament quarterfinals, when she scored her first career goal in the Eagles 2-0 victory. Three days later, in the semifinals, Ragney picked up an assist while also contributing to a defense that held the Anderson (S.C.) Trojans to just five shots in a 5-0 shutout by the Eagles. In the final against Wingate, Ragney helped lead her team to a 2-1 triumph that clinched the SAC title.

"I try to do my best because we need everyone to do their best," Ragney said. "I think in our supporting group, everyone did well, so I just try to do the same."

After the tournament, the native of Iceland was named to the all-tournament team. She was also selected as All-SAC Honorable Mention at the end of the regular season.

This is the fifth TSWA Player of the Week Award garnered by a C-N player this season. Lauren Wade (Coleraine, Northern Ireland) and Julianne Herrity (Donegal, Ireland) both were selected for the honor twice in September.

Ragney and her teammates will play their first match in the NCAA Tournament on Friday, when the sixth-seeded Eagles play third-seeded Limestone at 2 p.m.
