Herrity, Defense Help Drive Eagles Past Queens, 3-0, For Fifth Straight Win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Julianne Herrity (Donegal, Ireland) put together her fifth multi-goal game of the season for the Carson-Newman women's soccer team as they took down the Queens Royals, 3-0, at the Queens Sports Complex in Charlotte, N.C on Saturday.

This victory makes five-in-a-row for the Eagles, who are now 7-1 and they stay perfect in the South Atlantic Conference with a 3-0 record. Queens falls to .500 both overall and in the SAC at 4-4 and 2-2, respectively.

"Anytime you don't give up a goal, it's a great day," Soccer Coach Richard Moodie said. "We looked very comfortable defensively and we had a really balanced back four that was also able to get on the scoresheet. It took us a little longer to get on the board but we stayed patient and when we had a chance, it fell to the right player."

The first half was a defensive stalemate, neither team's fullbacks yielding a goal over the opening 45 minutes.

Herrity opened the scoring in the 52nd minute with her 12th goal in 2016. Holly Talbut-Smith (Crawley, England) booted a cross into the center of the 18-yard box and Herrity directed it past keeper Rachel Quest to make the score 1-0. Carson-Newman has scored first in seven of their eight matches this year.

Ten minutes later, Herrity added to her SAC lead in goals, this time with help from Varin Ness (Sogndal, Norway). Ness crossed a ball into the box from the right side and this time, Herrity used her head to put it across the line. This brace gives her four this season to go with a hat trick against Francis Marion on September 10th and increased the C-N lead to 2-0.

Averi Williams (Powell, Tenn.) added insurance in the 86th minute. She took a pass from Sydney Spadafora (Collierville, Tenn.) and uncorked a missile from outside the box into the top right corner of the frame for her second goal of the season. Spadafora also got credit for her third assist as the C-N advantage climbed to 3-0.

On the back line, the Eagles defense along with goalie Jacqueline Burns (Cookstown, Northern Ireland) continued their outstanding play of late with their third straight shutout. Burns collected all five shots that came her way and Queens couldn't manage a single shot on goal in the second half. Carson-Newman has allowed only one score in their last five contests.

The Eagles will be trying for their sixth straight win on Wednesday, as the schedule takes them to Lenoir-Rhyne for a 7pm clash.
