Tennessee Wesleyan comes to campus for Eagles' season lid-lifter

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.—After what has been a nightmare of weather to begin the season, the Carson-Newman women's tennis team is set to try again by welcoming Tennessee Wesleyan (4-1) to Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex Thursday afternoon for the Eagles' first contest of the season.

A late edition to the schedule, the Bulldogs were slated to take on the Eagles today, Wednesday Feb. 17th, but due to inclement weather surrounding campus over the past few days, the match was pushed a day later with the hope that sunny skies would surface the playing court.

Following the cancellations or postponements of the Eagles' first four matches of the fall and spring schedule, Carson-Newman is eagerly looking forward to taking the court on Thursday.

"We are looking forward to finally playing," coach Jean Love said. "We are ready and are tired of beating up on each other in practice."

After completing the 2014-2015 season with a 7-10 (4-7 SAC) mark, the Eagles will be looking to improve on the win/loss record this season by taking the first meet of the young season over Tennessee Wesleyan in Thursday's matinée.

The last time these two teams clashed was last season at Carson-Newman for the Eagles' final contest of the season. The Eagles capped off their ninth and final win of the season en route to a 9-0 shutout win on April 21st.

This year's squad will be led by three experienced seniors in Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal), Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.). The trio combined for 27 singles wins and Guerreiro was also tabbed an Honorable Mention from the SAC for her part in doubles play a season ago.
Along with the three aforementioned, C-N returns four others from last year's squad and also welcomes freshmen Hannah Ayers (Woodstock, Ga.), Merry Carson (Huntsville, Tenn.), Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Gabrielle Wood (Woodstock, Ga.) into the mix this season.

The Bulldogs, whose lone loss of the young season came at hands of Lee on Oct. 10th in the fall slate, are looking for their fourth straight win. Comprised mostly of underclassmen, Tennessee Wesleyan fields five true-freshman, four sophomores, two seniors and no seniors.

The team located in Athens, Tenn. competes in the Appalachian Athletic Conference of the country's NAIA Division of competition.

"We are ready. Our players are really excited and ready to go," Love said. "We have been working hard and our fitness and conditioning programs have gone really well. We have gotten in a lot of good practice, so we are ready."
