Eagles welcome SAC rival Tusculum to town for Tuesday's tennis matinee

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.—The Carson-Newman women's tennis team is set to clash with arch-rival Tusculum at home Tuesday afternoon as the Eagles look to pick up their first South Atlantic Conference win of the season Tuesday afternoon in Mossy Creek.

C-N (4-1, 0-1 SAC) dropped its SAC opener Sunday, Feb. 21, at Newberry 6-3.

Tusculum (7-0, 1-0 SAC) will be competing in its second SAC contest of the season on Tuesday. The Pioneers defeated Lenoir-Rhyne on the road over the weekend (2/27) 7-2 to claim their first conference win of the season.

The fall saw three Tusculum victories—all being via 9-0 sweeps against Virginia-Wise, King and Mars Hill back on October-- and have continued the good play on into the spring season.

Slated third in the league by the SAC prior to the start of the spring season, Tusculum showcases four preseason All-SAC picks.

After picking up 14 wins in the '15 season a year ago, Franziska Funke and Amanda Sumner are representatives on the league's first team for doubles play. Funke was also named to the second team's singles round after another 14 wins last season.

The Pioneers also claim two first teamers on the preseason poll in Kealee Heffner and Erin Mills. Heffner finished her junior campaign posting 13 wins while Mills had a team-high 16 singles wins in 2015.

In addition to the four preseason nods, Tusculum is comprised with an abundant of upperclassmen for the 2016 season. The roster includes five seniors and only one junior, sophomore and freshman.

After picking up an impressive 8-1 win over Tennessee Wesleyan to begin the season, Carson-Newman hit a road block on Sunday by losing its first SAC match of the season at Newberry, but will be looking to rebound against the high-powered Pioneer club.
