Indians fall victim to third-straight C-N win in 7-2 fashion

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.—The Carson-Newman women's tennis team picked up its third win in-a-row and its sixth win in the last seven outings by taking down Catawba 7-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex.

The Eagles (10-3, 4-3) took another step in the right direction in relation to cracking the top-six in the conference by season's end to be eligible to compete in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament with the 7-2 win over Catawba (11-9, 2-6) on Tuesday.

Carson-Newman jumped right out of the gate to take a 3-0 lead over the Indians by sweeping al three contests in doubles play.

Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) and Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) kicked things off for C-N with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) followed suit with an 8-4 win in the second-seeded contest.

Gabrielle Wood (Woodstock, Ga.) and Mallory Jackson (Erwin, Tenn.) finished off the round of action for Carson-Newman with an 8-3 win at No. 3.

The Eagles would continue the good play into the singles matches as Jackson tallied another point for C-N with a 6-4 victory in two sets at No. 6. Harris would then follow moments later with the match-clinching win in the first-seeded contest as the freshman took down Liz Renteria 6-7, 6-2 and 6-3.

Wood and Corsato-Owsianka would also pick up singles victories for the Eagles as Wood finished off Lauren Sledd 9-8 at No. 5 and Corsato-Owsianka took care of Maddie Henderson 6-0, 7-6 in the third contest.

Catawba's two team-points on the day came in the second and fourth singles contest. Gurreiro suffered only her second singles loss of the season Tuesday in losing to Erisa Onchi 4-6, 7-5 and 10-7 in a hard-fought three-set match. Sanderson would also come up short at No. 4, losing 6-4, 7-5.

The Eagles now have five singles players who have recorded at least eight wins on the season.

"We played well in doubles to go ahead 3-0 and we carried that momentum over to singles," coach Jean Love said following the match. "Mallory at No. 6 singles got us started with a straight set win for the fourth team-point.  Then Ali came in at No. 1 and won a three-setter to clinch the match for us."

Carson-Newman will look to continue its hot pace with another conference tilt at Lincoln Memorial Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
