Indians come to town to tangle with Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.—Thanks to yet another rain cancellation on Tuesday, the Carson-Newman women's tennis team gained a few extra days of rest coming off a three day weekend and will now set their sights to Catawba as the Eagles welcome the Indians to town on Thursday for their second South Atlantic Conference showdown of the season.

Carson-Newman (3-1, 0-1) dropped its first SAC game of the season 6-3 at Newberry on Feb. 21.

Catawba (6-8, 1-3) will be looking to pick up their second conference win of the season after taking down Lenoir-Rhyne 7-2 on March 1.

The Indians field five upperclassman on the season that look to help lead a group of four true freshman into the lineup this year. Coached by Jeff Childress, Catawba was picked to finish 10th in the league when the preseason polls were announced prior to the start of the season.

After picking up an impressive 8-1 win over Tennessee Wesleyan to begin the season, Carson-Newman hit a road block against the Wolves in losing its first SAC match of the season.

Since the lone loss of the season thus far, Carson-Newman has responded by winning its last three matches and two via the 9-0 sweep over Southern Wesleyan and Converse.

Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) have guided an Eagle club this season that has mixed and matched its lineup a multiple of times due to injuries. The two seniors are a combined 9-0 this year in singles play.

The last time these two squads when at it, Carson-Newman was on top of the 5-4 outcome in Salisbury, N.C. a year ago on Mach 20.

The match will begin at 2:00 p.m. at C-N's Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex.
