Lee and Queens up next as Eagles look to keep winning ways alive

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.—The Carson-Newman women's tennis team will try to keep its current two-match winning streak alive with two road tilts on the weekend beginning with Lee on Friday and South Atlantic Conference foe Queens (N.C.) Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles (12-4, 5-4) will serve off against the Flames (14-8) at 3:30 p.m. Friday and then begin play at 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon against the Cobras (8-2, 6-1).

"We have a non-conference match this week against Lee prior to a Saturday's conference match with Queens," coach Jean Love said. "We are looking to continue to work on doubles and singles improvements during the non-conference match. Queens is one of the top-teams in our conference and it will be a huge challenge for our team."

Lee, who competes in the Gulf South Conference, sports a 2-7 record in its league and is coached by Patric Hynes. The Flames are losers in their last outing of the season against North Alabama 7-2 on April 1. Maclain Yowersky and Morgan Friendlender are two seniors that lead a squad that is filled with one other junior and sophomore and four true freshmen.

Saturday's conference matchup at Queens features the SAC's current third-placed team.  The Cobras' lone league loss of the season came in their last outing of the season against Wingate 5-4 on April 4. Coached by Billy Boykin, Queens sports a roster of no seniors, five juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen.

Preseason All-SAC doubles pairing of Melissa Long and Carlotta Nassi have a 14-4 record to date as the team's No. 1 team. Marta Gonzalez and Caroline Nielson have a 13-5 record so far and Clair Hamilton and Jackie Ruck sport a 14-2 record in the No. 3 doubles position.

Nassi was also tabbed to the league's Preseason All-Conference singles squad and sports a 15-2 record atop of the Cobras lineup thus far into the season. Nielson and Gonzalez have also put together solid campaigns in 2016 as the two have a combined 29-1 record as the team's No. 3 and 4 singles players.

Carson-Newman's No. 3 singles player Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) is in the midst of a current 13-match winning streak in singles play and has not lost since Feb. 21 at Newberry. The sophomore is 14-1 on the year and has set the tone for the Eagles' lineup for the entirety of the season.
