LMU snaps skid, down Eagles 5-4

HARROGATE, Tenn.— The Carson-Newman women's tennis team's three-match winning streak snapped Wednesday afternoon with a 5-4 loss at Lincoln Memorial for its second South Atlantic Conference contest in as many days.

"This was a disappointing loss but the credit has to go to our opponents," coach Jean Love said following the loss. "They just outplayed us in singles. After sweeping the doubles, momentum was in our favor but that was short-lived. We certainly did not give it to LMU. They earned it by playing better singles when they had to."

Carson-Newman (10-4, 4-4) began the contest about as well as a team possibly could by sweeping all three matches in doubles play.

C-N's No. 1 pairing of Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) started things off for the Eagles with the 8-6 win while Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) picked up the 8-2 win at No. 2.

Gabrielle Wood (Woodstock, Ga.) and Mallory Jackson (Erwin, Tenn.) concluded doubled play with another 8-6 win in the third-seeded contest.

LMU (12-4, 7-3) quickly responded by picking up wins in the first two singles matches.

Elena Vasilyeva took down Harris 6-2, 7-5 in the first singles contest while Guerreiro suffered a 6-0, 6-3 loss a court over at No. 2.

Corsato-Owsianka then responded with her team-leading 12th win of the season by picking up the 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4 win in three sets in the third round match.

The Railsplitters would then win the remaining three matches of the round to claim the 5-4 win over Carson-Newman.

Sanderson fell 6-3, 6-0 in the fourth-seeded contest and Wood came up short against Roksolana Prudyvus 6-3, 6-2 in the fifth contest.

Jackson would then cap off the afternoon for the Eagles with a 6-3, 6-4 loss in the sixth and final match of the day.

The Eagles will try to tally a mark in the win column when the squad resumes play Saturday at Mars Hill beginning at 1:00 p.m.
