C-N cruises by out-of-conference Reinhardt for 12th win of the season

Waleska, Ga.—The Carson-Newman women's tennis team won its second contest in a row Wednesday afternoon after taking down out-of-conference Reinhardt 6-3 to pick up its 12th win of the season.

With 12 wins on the year, the Eagles (12-4) have its highest win total since prior to the 2009 season.

"Today was a match but we competed well," coach Jean Love said following the victory. "We started off well in doubles. Then Haleigh [Chastain] and Ali [Harris] got singles wins to set us up for the finish. Jill [Corsato-Owsianka] clinched the match for us and then Gabrielle [Wood] came through in an exciting third set tiebreaker.  It was a little icing on the cake."

Aside from Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and Jill Corato-Owsinka's (Germany) loss at No. 1 singles 9-8, Carson-Newman took two of three doubles contests from Reinhardt (9-4) to begin the afternoon.

Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) took down Alyssa Kroll and Paula Puentes 8-6 in the second-seeded match and Gabrielle Wood (Woodstock, Ga.) and Mallory Jackson (Erwin, Tenn.) cruised to a win at No. 3, 8-1.

Singles play was not much different as C-N again took the majority of the matches, 4-2.

Harris began the round with a win atop the Eagles' lineup by defeating Yamit Vodovaz 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1. Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) would then follow with 6-2 win in two sets in the fifth-slot of action.

Corsato-Owsianka would then clinch the match with the sophomore's 14th win of the season and 13th in-a-row. Carson-Newman's No. 2 player made quick work of Stanislava Klymova in winning 6-4 in two sets.

Freshman Gabrielle Wood also tallied a singles win on the day as the fourth-seeded player took down Kroll 6-3, 6-7, and 7-6 for the three set victory.

Carson-Newmaan suffered only two singles' losses on the day which came in the third and sixth spots of competition.

Sanderson fell 6-4, 7-6 to Paula Puentes in the second-seeded contest and Hannah Ayers (Woodstock, Ga.) lost 5-7, 6-2 and 6-2 to Albane Queinnac in the final match of the day.

The Eagles will look to make it three wins in-a-row when the squad travels to Lee on Friday for another non-conference match beginning at 3 p.m. C-N will then hit the road once more on Saturday to resume conference play at Queens beginning at 2:30 p.m.
