Pair of SAC matches highlight week for C-N

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.—The Carson-Newman women's tennis team will look to rebound from its second South Atlantic Conference loss of the season suffered from Coker on Friday, March 11, by playing host to two conference matches this week against Brevard on Tuesday and Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday.

Both contest are slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Carson-Newman's Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex.

"We play two conference opponents  in-a-row over the course of this week.  For us, we must focus on one match at a time," coach Jean Love said.  "I know that is what every coach says but it is so true for us.  For both men and women, we have got to come out and set the tone by playing good doubles.  We've got to focus on  the process of doing the little things well enough times so that the outcome takes care of itself.  In singles play, we have given good effort so far this season.  We just got the keep the faith and continue to fight for every point."

Brevard (2-9, 0-5) comes to Mossy Creek in search of its first conference win of the season as they battle an Eagle club (4-2, 0-2) who has found success this season but none in conference play.

C-N dropped its SAC opener on Feb 21 at Newberry 6-3 and fell to the Cobras in its last outing 6-3 at home.

The Tornadoes own two wins on the season to date coming from a Feb. 29 matchup against Kentucky Wesleyan (9-0) and on March 3 against St. John Fisher (6-3).

Coached by Coker alumnus ('11) Evan Schreiner, Brevard fields an eight-player roster for the 2016 season which includes only one senior in Nirvanna Silva, two juniors, three sophomores and two true freshman.

Looking to rid themselves of the one win season a year ago, the Tornadoes were slated 12th in the SAC preseason polls prior to the start of the regular season. The last time these two squads met up was on a Mach 15th date a year ago when Carson-Newman took a 6-3 decision in Brevard, N.C.

Originally slated to be played on Sunday, the C-N and Lenoir-Rhyne contest was postponed due to continued rainfall from Saturday night into Sunday morning.

L-R (6-8, 1-4) will be coming to campus Wednesday in search of its second conference of the season. The Bears are coming off a 6-3 win over Barton on March 6 and are looking for their first conference win since defeating Mars Hill 5-4 on Feb 25.

Picked to finish ninth in the league prior to the start of the 2016 season, Lenoir-Rhyne welcomes two seniors back to the roster in Dominque Bruce and Meaghan Liner for their final season, as well as three sophomores and four freshman.

The Bears are coached by Dean Mathias.
