Volleyball honored with Team Academic Award from AVCA

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman volleyball team earned national recognition from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Eagles were one of six South Atlantic Conference teams to bring in the Team Academic Award that honors high school and collegiate teams.

To qualify for the award, a team must maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average. The accolade dates back to the 1992-93 academic year.

The 12 student athletes compiled a 3.34 GPA as the volleyball team tallied the highest cumulative GPA on a team with at least 10 athletes.

Eight of the 12 players had at least a 3.33 GPA last year as the Eagles were led by junior outside hitter Sara Fairley (Charlotte, N.C.) who posted a 4.0.

The other seven student athletes that were on the list included Kianna Sedlacek (Cardington, Ohio), Kristina Hill (Lake Orion, Mich.), Lauren Santarelli (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Rachel Harper (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, Tenn.), Lindsey Wells (Morristown, Tenn.) and Taylor Lowe (Franklin, Tenn.)

Carson-Newman packs up the gear and journeys to Belmont, Calif. to participate in the Route 92 Tournament on September 5 against Notre Dame de Namur, Holy Names, Humboldt State and Academy of Art over a two-day span.
