Ward, Pickett bring home Bojangles’ Athlete of the Week honors

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman men's soccer's James Ward (Trine Cornwall, England) and volleyball's Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, Tenn.) have been named Bojangles' Male and Female Athletes of the Week.

Junior James Ward (Truro, United Kingdom) scored the first goal for the Carson-Newman men's soccer team in the 2-1 win over Anderson.

In the 36th-minute, the Eagles lined up for a corner kick. Krisitan Speake's kick got deflected out to the top of the box and landed at Ward's feet. Without looking, the junior sent the ball back into the back with the Trojan goalkeeper off his line and scored his second career goal.

It was Ward's second goal off a corner this season, his other came against Newberry.

Pickett continued her productive season with 32 assists and eight digs to start the week against Coker while recording her 10th double-double of the year with 49 assists and 19 digs against Wingate in a win that snapped the Bulldogs 55-match conference win streak. The senior has recorded at least 30 assists in 13 straight matches and she has notched at least 40 assists eight times this year.

Her 19 digs against the Bulldogs were the second-most in a match this year. The setter's 974 assists this year are the 37th-most in the nation this year as she ranks second in the SAC with 10.15 assist per set this year. Pickett has tallied 49 service aces this year which leads the conference and ranks 22nd in Division II this year.

Bojangles is a proud corporate sponsor of Carson-Newman athletics.  Eagle fans can get a free large sweet tea from the Jefferson City location the Saturday and Sunday after a Carson-Newman football game where the Eagles score 28 points or more by telling the cashier, "It's Bo Time at Carson-Newman."
