Eagles move up to sixth in latest regional rankings

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After defeating the seventh-ranked Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday, the Carson-Newman Eagles moved up from ninth to sixth in the latest regional rankings released by the NCAA Wednesday afternoon.

The top eight teams make the NCAA Division II Playoffs with an automatic qualifier coming from the South Atlantic Conference, the Peachbelt Conference and Conference Carolinas.

The Eagles have solidified the second seed in the SAC standings with two regular season games remaining. Carson-Newman is 5-3 against teams ranked inside the top 10 in the Southeast region with a chance to get another victory against the Anderson (S.C.) Trojans Friday night.

Carson-Newman's four losses in the region in the third-fewest and two fewer than any other team in the top 10 of the region.

Armstrong State, No. 15 in the AVCA poll, leads the region followed by Wingate. South Carolina Aiken and Georgia Regents University Augusta round out the top four.

Lenoir-Rhyne begins a string of three straight SAC schools in fifth with the Trojans ranked seventh.

Lander, Tusculum and Montevallo round out the top 10 schools in the Southeast.

Carson-Newman ends the 2014 regular season at home against Anderson Friday night and Newberry Saturday afternoon.
