JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – A new season of men's and women's tennis is just around the corner for Carson-Newman as head coach Jim Frederick gears up his squad for its season opener on Jan. 31 against Martin Methodist College.
"I'm excited about the season starting," Frederick said. "The men's team is totally different with five new players…the girls also will be better and it will be a great competition for who plays five, six and seven (singles). That's pretty close, right now, that's pretty much a toss-up."
C-N's first four meets against Martin Methodist, Milligan, King and Lee will be played at the Knoxville Racquet Club before the squad turns its attention to its first road trip to Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn. on Feb. 14.
South Atlantic Conference plays begins and ends against two of the toughest teams in the country at the Division II level. The Eagles will open SAC play here at the Charles A. "Buddy" Catlett Tennis Complex on March 4 against Wingate, who enter the season ranked No. 4 and 11 in the men's and women's divisions, respectively. The season concludes April 11. with an away match against No. 23/22 Queens.
Following the team's Mossy Creek opener against Wingate, C-N will take one of the longest road trips of the season to Newberry on March 7 before returning to play Lincoln Memorial on March 11 as part one of a three-match homestand that concludes March 14 against Bluefield College.
Other road trips on the docket include a swing through Virginia and the Carolinas when the team travels to UVa Wise, Lenoir-Rhyne and Anderson on March 18-24 for three matches in seven days.
Senior day is slated for April 8 when the Eagles take on the Pioneers of Tusculum.
Not counting home matches at the Knoxville Racquet Club which still see the team travel or the exhibition match at Sewanee on Feb. 16, the Eagles will rack up approximately 2,402 miles on the road. Stretched across the continental United States, the miles from Mossy Creek would reach all the way to South Lake Tahoe in California.
