Eagles travel to Georgia Gwinnett Invitational aiming for deep run

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis team will travel to Lawrenceville, Georgia for the Gwinnett Invitational on Oct. 11th, 2019.

Fourteen programs will attend the event including South Atlantic Conference rival Tusculum as well as familiar foes Emmanuel and Belmont Abbey.

Also featured will be Division I The Citadel and of course Georgia Gwinnett, the host of the tournament, a program that has won 11 NAIA National Championships.

Freshmen Marc Janse (Zeewolde, Netherlands) and Ids Waterbolk (Bennekom, Netherlands) aim to continue to lead the way for the Eagles through this fall season as the two have combined to win at least one singles match at every event so far this year.

The duo will team up in doubles play as well.

"Well you have one that's steady and one that's big, tall, aggressive and can move," Carson-Newman coach Jim Frederick said. "They've played together in the Netherlands before and I expect them to play well together."

Senior Gabriel Dabdab (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) looks to recover from two singles match losses at the University of Cumberlands, both of which he held leads in.

He will continue the roll he has played as a mentor for the team's four freshman when he pairs with newcomer Hugo Castets (Gradignan, France) in their doubles matches.

"I expect Dabdab to lead the way a bit there," Frederick said. "Each of the freshmen need something different. It's not the same for all freshmen and that's normal."

Freshman Joshua Ott (Knoxville, TN) will team up with junior Daniel Cox (Chattanooga, TN) at the event as well.

The men's "A" tournament consists of 64 players while the men's "B" will feature 32 athletes. It is technically possible for one Carson-Newman athlete to play another in this format, which is what happened at the Wingate Invitational on Sept. 7th, 2019 when Janse was matched up with Dabdab.

"We'd like that to happen because that can only happen in a later round," Frederick said.

Be sure to keep up with the Carson-Newman men's tennis team all season long across C-N's social media platforms.
