Eagles prepare for pair of road trips

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - After two home games the week prior, Carson-Newman volleyball will collect some road time this Tuesday and Wednesday. 

Carson-Newman volleyball (5-6, 3-0) will hit the road this Tuesday for Gaffney, S.C home of the Limestone Saints (4-2, 2-1). Play will begin at 6:00 P.M EST at the Timken Center. This meeting will mark the ninth match between the teams, C-N looks for their sixth straight win over Limestone. 

For a quick turnaround, the Eagles will travel north the following day, Sept. 20, to the University of Virginia at Wise (5-3, 0-2) for their second and final match of the week. This Wednesday will mark the eighth meeting between the Eagles and Cavaliers beginning in September of 2019. Carson-Newman is currently undefeated against the Cavaliers, and Wise plays to secure their first history win over C-N. 

Carson-Newman ended last week finding back to back home turf victories over Emory & Henry and the Tusculum Pioneers. They currently hold a 5-6 record over the 2023 season and have won the last eight regular season SAC matches, rolling over from the past season. 

Three Eagles are currently ranked across the nation in Division 2. Julia Wheeler is placed 16th for total kills, ninth for kills per set, 14th for kills per set, and fifth nationwide for attacks per set. Skylor Weaver is 136th for total blocks and Taylor Keeran is 88th for total blocks and 44th for blocks per set. 

Limestone is 4-2 so far this year, 2-1 in SAC play, losing to Anderson and defeating Catawba and UVA Wise. Limestone v. UVA Wise went to four tightly contested sets. Limestone scored off of 60 kills over Wise's 45, though the Cavaliers outscored Limestone in aces and blocks. UVA Wise rejected 12 total balls and scored nine times from the endline. 

Limestone ended their 2022 season 7-11 against SAC teams and 10-12 overall. Carson-Newman swept Limestone at home last year, and won by 3-1 in Gaffney, S.C. 

UVA Wise is off to 5-2 start, 0-2 in the SAC. They found their first loss to Tusculum 1-3 after putting up a fight in all four sets. In both conference play games this season, Wise has not lost by more than five points in any set. 

The Cavaliers are ranked 20th nationally in blocks per set, averaging 2.44. They have also placed 21st in Division 2 in team digs per set, with an average of 17.91. Cassidy Farley is ranked 85th for total career blocks with 198.  

Wise was 2-17 in conference last season, and 0-2 against the Eagles. Since their first match in 2019, Carson-Newman has not lost once to the Cavaliers and swept five of the seven contests.
