Moore Sets Two Qualifying Times While Lowe Breaks School Record at Buccaneer Invitational

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Devon Moore continued his dominance with a duo of national qualifying times in the 60 and 200 meter run.

Moore won the 60 meter run with a sprint of 6.80 seconds. He went on to win the 200 meter run with a time of 21.59 seconds. 

Also competing in the 60 meter run was Sterling Melancon, who's time of 6.87 seconds in his first ever race sits him just 0.01 seconds from a national qualifying time. Zuriel Jimpson tied his personal best at 7.00 seconds 

Amanda Lowe broke her own school record in the 60 meter dash to close out the Buccaneer Invitational.

With a time of 7.88 seconds, Lowe broke the previous marks she set in 2019 by 0.02 seconds en route to an fourth place finish.

Tia Davis also competed in the 60 meter run, setting a new personal best time of 7.88 seconds to finish seventh.

In the 400 meter run, Isaiah Weasby started his Carson-Newman career with a bang, winning the men's 400 meter run with a sprint of 49.78 seconds. Weasby's run is already just 0.35 seconds away from tying the school record.

KJ Laribo also competed in the 400, setting a new PR of 51.41 seconds to finish eighth. Raymond Brugmans set a new PR in the 400 meter run at 52.19 seconds with a 12th place finish. Jackson Bostick set a personal best with a time of 53.20 seconds and an 18th place finish.

In the field, the Eagles swept the men's and women's pole vault with victories by Abby Owens and Josh Whitaker. Whitaker won with a jump of 4.31 meters, while Owens winning jump of 3.50 meters was a new personal record. 

Amy Zadroga and Marlee Baker also competed in the pole vault. Zadroga finished seventh with a jump of 2.95 meters while Baker finished 10th at 2.80 meters.

"Today was an emphasis on sprints and we did well in all of those events," says Director of Track & Field and Cross Country David Needs. "Winning both pole vault events was just a little extra greatness from today."

The Eagles day started strong with Luke Smith finishing fifth in the shot put with a new persoal best toss of 13.93 meters. Draven Green finsihed 10th with his toss of 12.74 meters while Trayzell Jueridini-Wyche finished behind him at 11th with a throw of 12.49 meters.

Camden Fritz continued his strong track & field debut with another top-eight finish, placing eighth in the men's triple jump with a personal best jump of 12.43 meters.

Darcie Bagent set a personal record in the shot put with a toss of 8.23 meters to finish 15th. Rachel Hickey finished behind her at 16th with a throw of 7.99 meters.

Davis and Lowe were not finished after the 60 meter run, as the duo both participated in the 200 meter run. Davis finished fourth with a time of 25.82 seconds while Lowe finished 13th with a new personal best time of 26.35 seconds. Anslee McGlocklin also set a new personal best time with a 17th place finish and a time of 26.88 seconds.

Three runners set personal best times in the men's 200 meter run with Melancon finishing fifth with a time of 22.12 seconds, Jordan Hibbert finishing 11th at 22.72 seconds and Austin Greer finishing 18th at 23.16 seconds. Zuriel Jimpson finished ninth in the 200 meter run with a time of 22.60 seconds. 

In all, 15 new personal bests were set on Saturday for the Eagles.

"Winning events is fun, but I care more about the marks we get," says Needs. "The better the mark, the better someone will improve and the better chance they have of going to nationals. We're a good team and we're not just one or two star athletes. We're slowly improving and we're headed in a good direction."

The Eagles continue the long weekend in Johnson City with the "Run As Fast As You Can" Meet tomorrow, Feb. 7. The meet is running events only.
