LEXINGTON, Va. - A small convocation of eagles will head north to Lexington, Va. to compete in the 2021 VMI Winter Classic this weekend.

The field will be full of NCAA Division I schools, including host VMI, Delaware, George Mason, James Madison, Radford, USC Upstate, and VCU. Several SAC schools will also be competing such as Catawba, Limestone, Queens and Tusculum.

The last time Carson-Newman competed at VMI was in the 2020 VMI Classic. Devon Moore won the 60 and 200 meter run.

Moore set two qualifying marks with a run of 6.80 seconds in the 60 meter run and 21.59 seconds in the 200 meter run at the Buccaneer Invitational. Moore won both events and went on to win the 60 meter run at the Run As Fast As You Can Meet as well, with a time of 6.97 seconds.

Joseph Oreva will look to build off of his record shattering performance in Johnson City. The freshman from Nigeria broke Larry Cooke's 44 year old record with a jump of 7.75 meters in his fifth attempt of the afternoon at the Buc Dome. It took him just eight minutes later to break the record again with an astounding jump of 7.84 meters.

Nathalie Schumacher has had a hot start in the women's high jump, winning two straight event championships.

The Eagles will compete as a team next week, Feb. 19-20 in Salem, Va. at the Finn Pincus Invitational at Roanoke College
