Moore wins 100 meter run as Eagle men finish third at Lee Invitational

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Devon Moore added another event title to his ever expanding trophy case as the Eagles wrapped up the regular season at the Lee Flames Invitational.

Moore won the 100 meter run with a time of 10.38 seconds. The win is Moore's second straight victory in the event and his sixth career victory in the 100 meter run. Moore has never finished lower than third in the 100 meter run. Moore's time moves him into a tie for third fastest in Division II in the event. 

The personal bests continued to fall for the Eagles, setting 17 new personal bests in Cleveland. 

"It was a long day and it rained a lot but it was a good day," says Director of Track & Field and Cross Country David Needs. "We feel like we got a lot our of out guys. This was a great benchmark for us for what it's going to take for us to do well in conference. It was a great teaching tool for us and those kids who got a taste of what nationals may be like and our coaches really prepared us for a great weekend."

Three of the top five spots in the men's high jump went to the Eagles. Isaiah Kyle finished second with a clearance of 2.10 meters. Shane Connell finished third with a clearance of 1.95 meters, while Christian Shouse's clearance of 1.95 meters put him in fourth and is a new outdoor personal best. 

In the men's long jump, Courtavious Garrett finished third with a jump of 7.08 meters, a new personal best and his fourth straight top-five finish in the event. Shouse set another new outdoor personal best with a jump of 6.75 meters to finish fourth, while Camden Fritz finished fifth with a new personal best jump of 6.73 meters.

Sterling Melancon set a new personal best in the 100 meter run, finishing fourth with a time of 10.71 seconds. Melancon has never finished lower than fifth in any race he has competed in so far in his track & field career while at Carson-Newman.

The men's 4x100 relay team featured DeQuan Dudley running in his first event for the Eagles. Dudley and teammates Melancon, Isaiah Weasby, and Moore finished third with a time of 41.36 seconds, 0.14 seconds faster than team's the first posted time at Lenoir-Rhyne earlier this season.

Dudley finished 16th in the 100 meter run, setting a new Carson-Newman personal best with a time of 11.19 seconds. Joseph Oreva set a personal best in the 100 meter with a time of 11.12 seconds. 

Jordan Hibbert demolished his old personal best in the 100 meter run by 0.20 seconds with a time of 11.23 seconds. Austin Greer also obliterated his old personal best in the event, getting below 12 seconds for the first time in his career with a time of 11.44 seconds.

Weasby continued his strong day, finishing second in his heat in the 400 meter run with a time of 49.44 seconds, good enough for seventh overall.

Josh Whitaker continued his strong freshman campaign, finishing eighth in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.33 meters. Whitaker has finished in the top-10 of every meet he has competed in so far in his career.  

Trayzel Jureidini-Wyche finished eighth in the javelin with a toss of 49.42 meters, his fourth straight top-10 finish of his career and third of the season. Jureidini-Wyche also finished fifth in the discus with a toss of 48.70 meters, his fifth straight top-five finish in the event. Harrison Sheeler set a new personal best with a throw of 35.87 meters.

Logan Pender finished 15th in the shot put with a toss of 13.98 meters. Luke Smith set a new outdoor personal best in the event with a throw of 13.06 meters, while Sheeler set a new personal best with a toss of 12.72 meters.

Amy Zadroga began her 2019 SAC Outdoor Javelin Championship defense with authority, finishing second in the event with a throw of 32.41 meters. The Tolland, Conn. native has finished in the top-10 in the javelin in four straight meets, dating back to Mar. 30, 2019. Teammate Madison Bunch finished fourth overall with a new personal best throw of 31.67 meters, demolishing her old personal best by almost 0.50 meters. Nathalie Shumacher competed in the javelin for the first time in her career, setting a personal best toss of 26.46 meters and finishing 12th. 

Two weeks after setting a new school record, the women's 4x100 relay team of Amanda Lowe, Tia Davis, Morgan Bailey and Timaya Ray finished third with a time of 48.09 seconds.

Ashton Abbott finished eighth in the discus with a toss of 34.40 meters. Abbott has finished in the top-10 in the event in seven straight meets, dating back to Mar. 16, 2019.

Lowe finished 11th overall in the 100 meter run with a time of 12.34 seconds. 

Faith Nelms set a new outdoor personal best in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:08.01 seconds. 

Rachel Hickey set a new outdoor personal best in the shot put with a toss of 7.76 meters, almost 0.30 meters farther than her previous outdoor best.

Bailey set a personal best in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:14.72. 

Current sprints coach Kieran Showler-Davis also competed in the 100 meter run, finishing second with a time of 10.61 seconds.

The men's team finished the event third with 73 total points, while the women's team finished seventh with 33 total points.

The Eagles will take a week off before heading to Hickory, N.C. for the 2021 SAC Outdoor Track & Field Conference Championships on Saturday, Apr. 24.
