BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - The Carson-Newman track and field team heads home from the Montreat Invitational with four national provisional marks, a new school record and a meet championship.
The men's team finished the meet as event champions, earning 108 total points. The Eagles beat out Division I programs UNC-Asheville, Western Carolina and Wofford and fellow SAC programs Anderson, Lenoir-Rhyne, Lincoln Memorial and Catawba.
The women's team finished ninth with 39 points. Western Carolina won the women's meet championship with 118 points.
"While I'm happy about the team win, I'm even more proud of how many personal bests we had this weekend," says Director of Track & Field and Cross Country David Needs. "We set a school record, had four provisional marks and set numerous personal bests. Hopefully this weekend is just a small highlight of the season and we can continue to improve as we head to Lee in a few weeks."
Nathalie Schumacher set a national qualifying mark with a new personal best in the women's high jump to lead the way for the Eagles on day two of the Montreat Invitational.
The Germany native won the high jump with a clearance of 1.70 meters, 0.06 meters higher than the second place finisher. The jump, at the time, made Schumacher the unofficial number one jumper in the nation at the Division II level. Schumacher has now won five events between the indoor and outdoor season and five of the last seven events she has competed in.

The women's 4x100 relay team of Amanda Lowe, Tia Davis, Morgan Bailey and Timaya Ray set a new school record with a time of 47.68 seconds, good enough for a third place finish. Lowe and Davis were also members of the original record holding quartet that ran a time of 48.01 seconds in 2018.
Devon Moore continued his dominant 2021 season, winning the 100 meter run with a national qualifying time of 10.51 seconds, beating the second-place runner by 0.15 seconds. Moore also set a provisional mark in the 200 meter run, winning the event with a time of 21.24 seconds.
Shane Connell set a new personal best in the high jump with a clearance of 2.05 meters to win the event and set a provisional mark. Teammates Danilo Cardoso and Samuel Cleek finished tied for third with a clearance of 1.95 meters.
The Eagles finished the day with six event wins.
Isaiah Weasby won the 400 meter run with a personal best time of 48.48 seconds, his second win in the event in three tries this season. Weasby also set a new personal best in the 200 meter run with a time of 22.26 seconds.
Trayzel Juredini-Wyche continued his phenomenal weekend, winning the discus with a personal best throw of 49.33 meters. Juredini-Wyche won the event at the 2019 Montreat Invitational and has finished in the top-three in discus in five of the last six times he has competed in the event.
Abby Owens won the pole vault with a new personal best clearance of 3.55 meters. Owens has now finished in the top-three in the pole vault in six straight events between the outdoor and indoor seasons.
The Eagles' strong weekend was anchored by 25 personal bests.
Bailey finished 15th in the 100 meter hurdles with a new personal best with a time of 16.61 seconds. She also set a personal best in the 100 meter with a time of 13.10 seconds
Karolina Herastovska set a new personal best in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:07.86.
Lauren Tabor demolished her old personal best in the 800 meter run by almost two seconds with a time of 2:27.30.
Maxie Campbell set a personal best in the 200 meter run with a time of 29.29 seconds.
Rachel Hickey set a new personal best in the discus with a toss of 28.82 meters.
Morgan Stanton finished ninth in the high jump with a personal best clearance of 1.56 meters.
Courtavious Garrett set a personal best in the 100 meter run with a time of 11.18 seconds. His teammate Jordan Hibbert also set a personal best in the event with a time of 11.44 seconds while Camden Fritz set a personal best with a time of 12.19 seconds.
Garrett also set a personal best in the triple jump, finishing second with a jump of 14.14 meters.
Raymond Brugmans continues to inch closer to the school 800 meter record. His time of 1:57.18 is a new personal best and was good enough for a ninth place finish. His teammate Christian Henry set a new personal best in the event with a time of 2:02.44. Trent Lovelace set an outdoor personal best in the event with a time of 2:15.62, while Benjamin White also set a personal best time of 2:29.70.
Jackson Bostick finished third in the 400 meter hurdles with a new personal best time of 58.10 seconds, his second straight top-five finish in the event.
Luke Smith finished with a new personal best in the discus with a toss of 34.37 meters, while teammate Matthew Campbell also set a new personal best of 29.79 meters.
Josh Finchum set a new personal best in pole vault for the second week in a row with a clearance of 3.80 meters.
There were several other notable finishes and streaks that continued this weekend for members of the track & field team.
Lowe finished seventh in the 100 meter run with a time of 12.45 seconds, her sixth straight top-10 finish in the event. Davis finished 10th with a time of 12.55 seconds, her 12th straight top-10 finish in the event. Davis has never finished outside the top-10 in the 100 meter run.
Ashton Abbott finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 35.00 meters to clinch her fifth straight top-10 finish in the event.
Amy Zadroga finished third in the pole vault. The Tolland, Conn. native has finished in the top-10 in the event in nine straight meets, dating all the way back to 2018.
Josh Whitaker finished second in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 4.40 meters. The freshman has finished in the top-three in every single event he has competed in so far in his young Eagle career.
Logan Pender finished seventh in the shot put with a toss of 14.10 meters, his third straight top-10 finish in the event.
Carson-Newman will take a week off before heading to the Lee Flames Invitational in Cleveland, Tenn. beginning on Apr. 9.
