Tusculum returns to McCown Field

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (3-4, 2-1 SAC) men's soccer team hosts conference rival Tusculum (3-4, 1-2 SAC) tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

 

Both C-N and the Pioneers are coming off a loss at Wingate. Tusculum fell to the Bulldogs 3-1 last Saturday. Wingate went into halftime leading 2-0. In the 56th minute, Roberto Pimentel put the Pioneers on the board off a cross from Mason Fox.

 

Seven minutes later, Shaun Gadsby scored his third goal of the match for Wingate to seal the 3-1 victory.

 

The Eagles landed in Wingate on Monday for a 4 p.m. makeup match from their stormed out game earlier this season. The Lads' took an early lead when junior center back Rurik Pereira (Brazil) sent a bicycle kick past the keeper six minutes in. Marius Staalby (Norway) and Kristian Speake (United Kingdom) were both credited with assists.

 

Three minutes before halftime, Wingate tied it up. The second half saw no scoring and the match was sent into overtime.

 

In the 93rd minute, Charlie Machell scored his sixth goal of the season and the golden goal of the game for a 2-1 final in favor of the Bulldogs.

 

Last season, the Eagles toppled Tusculum in overtime on its home field. The game was tied nil nil after regular time expired. Less than a minute into the first overtime period, Sindre Welo (Norway) beat the keeper to the left for an unassisted golden goal.

 

The Eagles lost 4-0 to the Pioneers in 2011, Coach Richard Moodie's first season with the men. The following year, C-N tied Tusculum 1-1 after double overtime; then freshman Ryan Odom (Tenn.) supplied C-N's goal.

 

By Coach Moodie's third season with the men, the Lads defeated their SAC rival and went on to finish second in the national tournament.
