Anderson Highlights

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman men's soccer player Lukas Jokich (Leipzig, Germany) referred to it as a storybook ending.

The senior's time at Mossy Creek has been plagued with injuries and has not allowed him to see playing time on McCown Field. That was, until Saturday night's match against Anderson.

The German had never played a minute in an Eagle kit until he stepped onto the field in the 76th minute.

Jokich's 90th minute goal propelled the Eagles to a 2-1 win over the Trojans and into a third-place finish in the South Atlantic Conference standings, which guarantees C-N a home match Tuesday in the Food City SAC Tournament.

"It felt great. It would be a lie to not say it felt great," Jokich said of his game-winning goal. "This is only a story soccer can write. No body could have written a book for that. It's just great."

The Eagles opened the scoring in the first half. In the 36th minute, center back James Ward (Truro, United Kingdom) scored off Kristian Speake's (Haverfordwest, United Kingdom) corner kick and gave the Eagles a 1-0 advantage at the half.

At the 53rd minute mark, Anderson answered Aaron Robertson beat goalkeeper Micah Varner (Charlotte, N.C.) to equalizer the match, 1-1.  The Trojans' goal set the stage for the Jokish's debut.

"It's a great Senior Night for (Jokich,) and for the boys. First game, 15 minutes, first goal, it's amazing. The joke was 'Watch him come on and score in his first game for us'," coach Richard Moodie said. "What a great finish. Happy for him. Happy for the seniors and just very thankful for this group of young men."

The Eagles outshot the Trojans 17-10 and junior goalkeeper Micah Varner (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded four saves in 80 minutes of play. Senior keeper Nick Martin (Russellville, Tenn.) picked up the win in goal.

Seniors Joao Pedro Dowsley (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Speake picked up assists.

Carson-Newman's opponent for the first round of the Food Lion SAC Tournament has yet to be determined. Stay tuned to cneagles.com for the latest updates.
