Eagles, Pioneers draw 1-1 on McCown Field

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After 110 minutes of action, Carson-Newman (3-4-1, 2-1-1 SAC) tied SAC rival Tusculum (3-4-1, 1-2-1 SAC) 1-1.

"The guys worked so hard," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "They worked for each other."

Twelve minutes into the first half, Lucas Siqueira (Brazil) made a run up the right flank and pinged a cross into Tusculum's 18-yard box. Marius Staalby (Norway) made contact with his head sending the ball over the keeper to the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

"Lucas's cross was perfectly lofted," Staalby said. "I managed to get a head on it and it felt great. It's good to put something on the sheet."

After 45 minutes, both teams tallied four shots and two on goal. Staalby, Sindre Welo (Norway), Joao Dowsley (Brazil) and Rurik Pereira (Brazil) each released a shot for C-N with Welo and Staalby landing theirs on frame.

Cody Kammerzell and Mark Petterson each took two shots for the Pioneers in the first half placing on target one a piece.

"Two games in a row," Coach Moodie said, "we got the early goal and were unable to see the game out."

The Eagles held their lead until the 76th minute when Mark Patterson laced a shot past Kavi Luchowa (England) for goal one of his sophomore season. Jonathan Spicher claimed the assist.

"Being 2-1-1 in the conference," Coach Moodie said, "we're still in good shape."

The Pioneers outshot C-N 20 to 11 and 11 to five in shots on goal. Junior keeper Luchowa tallied 10 saves.

Dowsley ended the match leading the Eagles with three shots taken and one on goal; Staalby released two, one on goal.

"A tie is a fair result," Coach Moodie said. "Each team hit a crossbar. Both teams worked hard"

Patterson and Spicher each took five shots for TC with two and four on target respectively.

Robert Wagner (Germany) tops the Lads with five goals and 10 points closely followed by Welo who has totaled three goals, three assists and nine points on the year.

"I'm very proud of the boys and their performance," Coach Moodie said. "Going into Saturday, we just have to dust it off and move forward."

Tusculum heads to Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
