Eagles soar over Falcons 10-3

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles baseball team (2-2) defeated the Pfeiffer Falcons (0-4) by a 10-3 score at Joe Ferebee Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Carson-Newman shortstop Bo Ausmus (Jefferson City, Tenn.) shined at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBI and he belted a three-run homer in the top of the seventh, his second homer of the young season.

Eagle reliever Brandon Timmerman (1-0) earned the victory after pitching a scoreless fifth inning, while Pfeiffer starter Josh Branch (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits in three and two-thirds innings on the mound.

The Falcons struck first in the contest, scoring a pair of runs off of Eagle starter Dunagan in the bottom of the first. Carson-Newman got a run back in the top of the second on an Evan Kirkpatrick RBI single to cut Pfeiffer's lead to 2-1.

Carson-Newman took the lead in the top of the third as Cody Fox tied the game on an RBI double before Ausmus drove home Fox on an RBI single to give the Eagles a 3-2 advantage.

The Eagles added three unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning to increase the lead to 6-2. Carson-Newman next added to the scoreboard with a four-run top of the seventh inning, highlighted by Ausmus' three-run homer to put the score at 9-2.

Carson-Newman's final run in the seventh came on a Kirkpatrick RBI single, the second run he drove in during the afternoon. Kirkpatrick finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.

The Falcons were kept off the scoreboard from the second inning to the bottom of the ninth before Pfeiffer scratched an RBI double against Carson-Newman reliever Clayton Eames. Eames would collect the final out to preserve the Carson-Newman 10-3 victory.

In his first start of the year, Dunagan pitched four innings while allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. The Carson-Newman bullpen was dominant, as relievers: Josh Russell, Ben McKinney, and Evan Faithfull all worked scoreless innings before Eames finished the game in the ninth.

In addition to Ausmus and Kirkpatrick, designatd hitter Evan Jurjevic posted a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 and he scored three runs for the Eagle cause.

Pfeiffer second baseman Kyle Hackney went 3-for-4 with a run batted in, while first baseman Matt Wade went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in for the Falcons.

Carson-Newman will continue play on the road with a weekend series at USC Aiken from Feb. 8-10 in Aiken, S.C.
