Eagles fall to Mountain Lions 9-5

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (9-7, 5-2 South Atlantic Conference) fell to the Young Harris Mountain Lions (7-5, 0-3 Peach Belt Conference) by a 9-5 score on Wednesday afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.

Carson-Newman trailed 9-0 heading into the top of the seventh before scoring four runs in that frame and another in the ninth to make the contest a four-run game, yet the Mountain Lions held on for the 9-5 victory.

The Eagles have now lost their last two midweek games, and are 2-2 in midweek out-of-conference games this season.

Carson-Newman starting pitcher Dustin Dunagan (0-1) took the loss after allowing a run on three hits with three strikeouts in his three innings on the mound. Young Harris starter Travis Donahoo (1-0) earned the win after tossing five scoreless innings allowing only four hits and striking out one.

Young Harris took a 1-0 lead thanks to a Trey Rogers solo homer that led off the bottom of the first. After the Mountain Lions added a pair of runs in the fourth, Young Harris erupted with a six-run bottom of the sixth to take a 9-0 lead.

Among the offensive highlights in Yong Harris' sixth inning were a solo homer by Dom Wyshinski and a two-RBI double by Zach Bricknell that put the Young Harris lead at 9-0.

In the seventh, Carson-Newman got on the scoreboard thanks to a two-run homer by Shade Jett, his first round-tripper of the season to cut the lead to 9-2. Kevin Franchetti followed with a triple, and he would score on an RBI double from Cody Fox. Joe Tipton brought home the final Eagle run of the inning on his RBI groundout that cut the score to 9-4.

Carson-Newman would add a run on the ninth on a Peter Rajkovich RBI single, but the Mountain Lions collected the final out as Rajkovich was thrown out at second base to end the game in a 9-5 Young Harris victory.

Rajkovich and Jett were the only Eagles with multi-hit games, with Jett going 2-for-4 with his homer and 2 RBI while Rajkovich was 2-for-5. The top three hitters in the Young Harris batting order all had two-hit games, with six Mountain Lions collecting multi-hit games.

Carson-Newman will next play at home this weekend with a three-game series against Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday and Saturday at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. Friday's opening game is at 2 p.m., with the first game of Saturday's doubleheader beginning at noon.
