Eagles welcome Lander and Maryville to Mossy Creek

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles baseball team (3-4) will begin a six-game homestand with midweek contests against the no. 7 Lander Bearcats (5-1) on Tuesday and the Maryville Scots (4-1) on Wedneday, with both games beginning at 2 p.m. at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

The Eagles this past weekend took one out of three games from fifth-ranked USC Aiken, winning the Friday opener 8-0.

After posting a win in the series opener, the Eagles were shutout in the next two games, with the Pacers winning 6-0 and 7-0.

In Friday's opener, the Eagles led 2-0 thanks to a pair of unearned runs before posting a six-run rally in the ninth to power away from USC Aiken. Senior RHP Chris Armstrong (1-1) earned the win after tossing a scoreless six and a third innings; while Ryan Fillers pitched the final two and two-thirds, earning his first save of the season.

In the losses on Saturday and Sunday, the Eagles were held to four hits in both games with no Carson-Newman batter posting a multi-hit game.

After the season's first seven games, sophomore outfielder Evan Kirkpatrick (Jefferson City, Tenn.) leads the Eagles in hitting with a .467 batting average as he is 7-for-15 at the plate with four runs batted in. Second baseman Bo Ausmus (Jefferson City, Tenn.) leads the team with his nine RBI and two home runs.

Tuesday and Wednesday's action will be the first this season at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex, where the Eagles were 11-11 in 2012.

Lander, a member of the Peach Belt Conference, is off to a 5-1 start and has won its last four games, including a sweep of West Chester this past weekend. The Bearcats were picked to finish fifth in the preseason PBC coaches poll.

Maryville (Tenn.), a member of the Division III USA South Conference, is 4-1 to begin the year, and won a weekend USA South series with Averett this past weekend. The Scots, coached by Paul Henry, were picked to finish ninth in the preseason USA South coaches poll.

On Tuesday, the Eagles will send junior RHP Dustin Dunagan (0-0, 4.50 ERA) to the mound against Lander. Both games begin at 2 p.m. at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex, with coverage available on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network.
