Heartbreak finds Eagles in pitchers’ duel at Smokies Park versus LMU

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Last year in Carson-Newman's game at Smokies Park, the Eagles got a walk-off victory over LMU.  This year, the Eagles (13-19, 9-10 SAC) would find no such ninth-inning magic in a 2-1 loss to the Railsplitters (18-16, 11-8 SAC).

The loss is the Eagles 12th straight and Carson-Newman's eighth loss in the streak by three runs or less.

The game started well for the Eagles when Kevin Franchetti (Highland, Ind.) singled through the left side in the first inning to bring Zach Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) home from third.

The Eagles though got half of their six hits in that inning.  LMU would knot the game in the bottom of the first and take the lead in the fourth.

Brandon Cowan (4-2) went the distance for LMU, striking out 12 and walking one.  He threw 145 pitches, 96 of them strikes.

Chris Armstrong (Blaine, Tenn.) got shackled with the hard-luck loss (4-5) after tossing 7.1 innings of two-run ball.  Armstrong fanned 10 Railsplitters while scattering eight hits.

The series resumes Saturday at 1 p.m. in Harrogate, Tenn.
