Carson Newman Men's Soccer Beats Tennessee Wesleyan 3-0 in Exhibition

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles beat Tennessee Wesleyan 3-0 in an exhibition soccer match at McCown Field on Saturday afternoon.

The match was Carson-Newman's first preseason exhibition of the season under second-year head coach and C-N Director of Soccer Richard Moodie.

"I thought we handled Wesleyan well," said Moodie. "We controlled the game, I think everyone would agree that they didn't see much of the ball for the last 30 minutes, and it almost turned into a practice session for us.

"For us it's something to build on, I know the boys are excited," Moodie said. "We tell them that it's not the result but the performance that matters that matters so we can be happy with that."

Carson-Newman's first goal was scored near the end of the first period by preseason All-SAC selection Emmanuel Aboagye, who scored on a free kick. Aboagye missed last season with injury, but picked up second team All-SAC honors in 2010.

"He's a great player, an All-SAC selection, and after spending last season on the bench with injury he needed that kick for confidence," Moodie said. "The team certainly built on that kick."

The Eagles added two goals near the end of the final period with goals scored by Rurik Pereira and Joao Pedro Dowsley to put Carson-Newman's lead at 3-0, which would be the final score.

"The two Brazilian boys were scoring or assisting one another, and the combination is great," said Moodie. "We're still trying to figure out who fits in where in certain situations but two fantastic goals."

Carson-Newman will open its regular season on August 31 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Against Tampa. The Eagles home opener is on September 19 against Lincoln Memorial at 7:30 p.m. at McCown Field.
