Late Dowsley Goal Gives Eagles 2-1 Win Over Shorter

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles earned their first victory of the season with a 2-1 triumph over the Shorter Hawks (1-1-1) on Friday night in the Stanno Tournament, hosted by Tusculum College.

With just under six minutes to play in the second period with the game tied at one, Joao Pedro Dowsley found the back of the net as he put in a shot on a header that gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead, which would be the final score.

"That's probably the best game we've put together this season," said Carson-Newman Director of Soccer and Head Coach Richard Moodie. "The players worked hard and there was a great result."

Carson-Newman outshot Shorter in the match 18-5, with the Eagles putting together nine shots in both periods of the contest.

Shorter took the game's first lead in the 28th minute with Robert Ocheing scored on an Irvin Espinal assist from five yards out. The Eagles answered the goal just minutes later in the 32nd minute mark as Taylor Jolley scored his first goal of the season to tie the game.

The game remained tied until the 84th minute when Dowsley's goal secured the victory.

Carson-Newman goalkeeper Rumwald Le Guevel picked up his first win of the year, as he had three saves in the contest.

"He's a great goalkeeper," Moodie said of Le Guevel. "We've made him our captain, he's very energetic and enthusiastic. I've got peace of mind with him between the posts."

Carson-Newman will next play in the Stanno Tournament on Sunday afternoon, facing the Lees-McRae Bobcats at 3 p.m. on the campus of Tusculum College.
