FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Carson-Newman Eagles fell in their season opener against the Univeristy of Tampa Spartans 2-1 on Friday night.
Sindre Welo scored Carson-Newman's lone goal to tie the match at one at the 20-minute mark in the first period.
The Spartans first goal came at the 11 minute mark, with Craig Laird scoring on an assist by Dominic Goncalves. After Carson-Newman tied the game on Welo's goal nine minutes later, Tampa would score before halftime to take the lead.
A corner kick by Brian Kekete set up Joshua Freese who scored the go-ahead goal for the Spartans with three and a half minutes left in the first period.
Neither team scored in the second period, as Tampa held on for the 2-1 victory. The Eagles were outshot by the Spartans 15-9 in the match, with six Carson-Newman shots coming in the first period.
Carson-Newman's stay in Ft. Lauderdale continues on Saturday, as the Eagles will face the Nova Southeastern Sharks at the NSU Soccer Complex at 6 p.m.
